Mercedes has officially launched its first Formula 1 works team for five decades at its museum in Stuttgart, including the first look at its 2010 silver car livery.

The German car giant, which last November bought and rebranded the double title-winning Brawn GP squad, unveiled its famous ‘Silver Arrow’ colours on last year’s BGP 001 car while also presenting its all-German line-up of the returning Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg.

Its cars will run in the legendary silver livery that Mercedes-Benz made famous when it previously ran its own team in the pre-war grand prix era and the 1950s, while the incorporation of green into the design represents its new relationship with title sponsor Petronas.

Mercedes also confirmed that its first car will be known as the MGP W01, with the challenger to break cover for the opening day of pre-season testing in Valencia next Monday.

Speaking in front of over 600 guests at the event on Monday morning, Mercedes motorsport chief Norbert Haug described the launch of its new F1 team as the “most important chapter” in the German carmaker’s illustrious motorsport history.

“With today’s presentation of our new Mercedes GP Petronas Formula One Team, a new and certainly the most important chapter of over 100 years of Mercedes-Benz motorsport history begins,” Haug said.

“The new Formula 1 season will offer challenges which will be bigger than ever before in over sixty years of the sport’s history.”
He welcomed Rosberg and Schumacher to the team, as well as former Brawn team members at its Brackley factory, adding that the two parties were ready to face the challenges ahead under the Mercedes banner.

“We look forward to the cooperation with our drivers Nico Rosberg, who has enormous capabilities and perspectives, and with seven-time world championMichael Schumacher who is no less motivated than at the time when he began his professional motor racing career with Mercedes-Benz and then made his first step into such a successful Formula 1 career with our support," Haug added.

“I warmly welcome all our colleagues from last year’s world championship team Brawn GP headed by Ross Brawn and Nick Fry to the Mercedes family.

“There are challenging tasks ahead of us and we will tackle them with power, consistency and full motivation.”

Team principal Ross Brawn admitted it was an honour to be leading Mercedes’s first works team since 1955 and is hopeful the squad can add to the German firm's long list of motorsport successes.

"It is a privilege to be here at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart today for the official presentation of the Mercedes GP Petronas Formula One Team,” Brawn said.

“With your first look around the museum, you realise the fantastic racing heritage of Mercedes-Benz and we hope to be able to contribute to those successes going forward.

“Our team have been working extremely hard throughout last year and over the winter on the development of the MGP W01 and everyone at the team is looking forward to the start of testing in Valencia next week.”
