2009-spec car ugliest ever - Klien
    Tuesday, 18 November 2008
Nov.18 (GMM) Test driver Christian Klien has issued a damning appraisal of the appearance of F1's cars of 2009.

Observers had already raised their eyebrows when Williams recently tested a car fitted with a rear wing that conformed to next year's radical aerodynamic rule changes.

The towering, skinny and basic look is back in action at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya this week, and BMW-Sauber's interim offering is complete with a wide and flat 2009-style front wing.

"It's a sexy car isn't it?" BMW's Klien joked to reporters after driving the modified F1.08.

"As it is at the moment it's the worst formula one car I have ever seen. It doesn't seem like it fits, all the big wings and everything.

"But everyone will get used to it and it's not how it will look in March."

Complete with a KERS system and slick tyres, however, the car was more competitive than its aesthetics suggest, Klien said.

"It actually drives quite nice, the lap times are already quite good as you saw," he explained. "The high speed (sections) is a bit trickier but the slick tyres give a lot more grip at slower speeds."

    Buemi's well overrated anyway imo.

What interests me is that we've seen very little of Ferrari & McLaren's 09-spec cars yet. I wonder when we will.

'1. Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, 1:19.295
    2. Sebastien Bourdais, Toro Rosso, 1:19.839'

Thats the most interesting result for me. Bourdais should get the seat alongside Sato. 0.5 between RBR and STR is a smaller gap than I expected. Should we read into this?

Alos De La Rosa being 2+seconds slower in a FI and Slower than Fisi is a significant result.

Vettel took to warming up the brakes too literally.

I think the roasted brakes are from Loeb's car. With so many Sebastians at Red Bull, it's hard to tell. Razz

So far, here's where the teams stand:

    McLaren: Tested a KERS-equipped car.
Ferrari: Simulated KERS-weight with ballast, ran a frankendiator (that huge bulge), admitted to struggling with KERS. Will use a Magnetti Marelli system.
BMW: Ran an almost-'09 spec car (missing: the diffusor was '08 spec, and the gills on the sidepods will be illegal) with KERS and functioning wing-changes.
Toyota: Admitted to struggling with KERS, will start '09 without it.
Renault: Will use the same Marelli system as Ferrari, didn't run KERS-equipment.
Red Bull / Toro Rosso: As Renault.
Honda: Ran KERS and '09-legal front wing.
Williams: Ran '09-spec front and rear wings, KERS unknown - so far the only team to use flywheel-KERS.
Force India: Unknown, didn't run KERS (or Mercedes engines).

It'll be interesting to see who gets it right this year. With Williams and BMW running high rear wings and Honda having a relativity low rear wing it'll be interesting to see which is more of an advantage.

Honda didn't run a 2009-spec wing yet, Mike - what you see there is the regular 2008 wing.

There isn't much room to play with as far as aero goes.. This season, we had Renault's ultra-low front nose with the radical connectors, or the very high Honda nose. Next season? Minimum and maximums for the nosecone-height, and even more rules regarding other aerodynamic surfaces.

Ah I see. I thought Honda ran a '09 reg Front and Rear. I still think '09 will see different winners. Honda and Red Bull really think they are in with a chance of wins maybe even titles... I only think titles would happen if we keep points and no Medals.

Not sure about Red Bull, they seem to be rated alot higher since Vettel signed for them...

Yeah I genuinly, for the first time ever, have no idea what the pecking order will be.

I think we are very lucky to be able to have no idea. For 99% of past seasons we've all known who the top 3 teams will be.
